STRATEGIES TO EMPOWER YOUTH TO REDUCE THEIR RISK FOR PREGNANCY and HIV INFECTION

HIV & PREGNANCY TRAINING is November 4th and 5th, 2015
8:30 AM  to 4:30 PM
at Keeley’s Banquet Center, Portland, Maine

This training has passed.

Have you been looking for an effective prevention program? This free training event is open to staff of alternative schools and youth-serving agencies. The Department of Education and New Beginnings are sponsoring this training in an evidence-based curriculum that has been chosen by the Centers for Disease Control as one of its “Best Evidence Intervention.” This program is a good first step in developing the prevention skills needed by youth who may be sexually active.

Be Proud! is a six-lesson curriculum that research has shown:

INCREASES:

  • belief in the value of safer sex, including abstinence
  • confidence in negotiating safer sex
  • intention to practice safer sex
  • pride in choosing responsible sexual behaviors and

DECREASES:

  • sexual risk behaviors

This is an effective, skills-based program for the prevention of HIV, STD’s and Pregnancy:  The curriculum includes a series of fun and interactive experiences, including videos, trigger films, and role plays. Participants will experience the curriculum as if they were students and will practice the exercises and receive feedback on their facilitation skills. Participating  agencies and schools who replicate the program will receive a curriculum package, and access to the videos used in the program.

Who Should Attend:  This training is targeted at professionals working with high school-aged youth in time-limited settings. This program is well-suited to alternative schools, shelters, drop-in and teen centers and similar programs where using a longer, more intensive curriculum is not feasible. Be Proud! has been used by more than 40 schools and agencies in Maine.

It is strongly recommended that schools and agencies send staff who have already attended an introductory HIV training, but it is not a requirement. Along with adult staff, we also encourage youth  to attend in order to be trained as group facilitators for their peers. We request that youth who participate be a minimum of 16 years of age and have the capabilities to co-facilitate the program with adults who are also trained. Schools and agencies that have already sent staff in previous years are welcome to send new people. NOTE: Attendance at both days of the training is required.

Trainers:  Jody Pierce-Glover, HIV Prevention Educator at New Beginnings, and Joni Foster, HIV Prevention Trainer.

CEU’s:   1.4 CEU’s from the University of Maine are available for this training.  There is a $10 fee for CEU’S.

Commitment:  Participants are asked to commit to delivering Be Proud! in their school or agency by May, 2016.

The training, continental breakfast, lunch, and curriculum are at no cost to participants.  Reimbursement for substitutes is available for teachers if necessary for attendance.  Please register by Tuesday, October 27th
Bonus for 2015: All participants who complete this training are eligible for FREE registration at the statewide Comprehensive Sexuality Conference in April, 2016
