HARM REDUCTION & PREVENTION: Working with Youth at High Risk for HIV/AIDS (HRAP)

Held virtually November 15th & 17th, 2022 from 8:30 AM to Noon

Applications Open October 24th thru November 13th, 2022

The HRAP Training is designed to help youth workers acquire the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to effectively address a variety of challenging issues that may arise when working with vulnerable youth clients. New Beginnings, Inc., with support from the Maine Department of Education, is pleased to offer this training opportunity and Staff of youth-serving agencies and alternative schools are welcome to apply!

Motivating young people to assess and reduce their risks is challenging work. Adults need to feel comfortable talking honestly with young people about sensitive issues such as substance use, harm reduction, and a wide range of sexual beliefs and behaviors. Prevention strategies are more important than ever as Maine continues to see young people face unplanned pregnancies, substance use, and new STI infections, including HIV infection. This training utilizes the model of Positive Youth Development, emphasizing building on the strengths and resiliency that all young people possess. This is an excellent introductory training for all staff who are new to working with young people, as well as an update for more experienced staff who have not previously had training on these topics.

This training series meets the specific needs of those working with youth in high-risk situations through interactive training modules and emphasizing practice skills.

Training objectives include:

  • A basic understanding of the theory and process of behavior change
  • A basic understanding of HIV transmission and testing practices
  • Harm reduction strategies for working with youth who are using substances
  • Skills for helping youth assess their risks for HIV, STI’s, and pregnancy
  • Addressing the unique needs of often-marginalized groups, including BIPOC and gender and sexuality minorities

Do you work with or otherwise mentor a young person who may be interested in learning the skills associated with participating in this training alongside you? Email jwyman@newbeginmaine.org for more info!

This training series is virtual; participation requires access to a device compatible with Zoom software, a stable internet connection, and working speakers, webcam, and microphone. Participants should also be able to successfully navigate the “chat” feature (i.e. working mouse and keyboard).

Certificates of Attendance will be provided upon completion of the entire training series, and CEU’s will be available for purchase.

***Please do not apply unless you can attend the entirety of the training series.***

Adults/educators who do not currently work directly with these youth (e.g. primarily work with younger adolescents, children, lower-risk populations, or in program administration) may submit an application request but will likely be placed on the waiting list until after the application deadline, and contacted as space allows.
