In 2013, New Beginnings, Inc. became the nonprofit fiscal sponsor of Outright Lewiston-Auburn. While the focus of New Beginnings’ mission is homeless youth, both New Beginnings and Outright L-A have been committed to making youth agencies and services in Maine more welcoming to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) young people. Homelessness disproportionately affects these youth, with up to 40% of homeless youth identifying as LGBTQ.
“We have worked closely with Outright L-A for years and are proud to sponsor them as they rebuild their organization,” said New Beginnings Executive Director Bob Rowe upon starting the fiscal sponsorship, “It’s important that these crucial services for LGBT youth continue to exist in our community, and we’ll help as much as we can to make that happen.”
The Advisory Board of Outright L-A manages its own organization, volunteers, and fundraising, in compliance with the policies of New Beginnings. Donations to Outright L-A are fully tax-deductible as allowed by law through New Beginnings, Inc.
Since 1996, Outright L-A has provided essential support and advocacy for LGBTQ young people in greater Lewiston-Auburn, including weekly drop-in youth groups with trained adult volunteers, training programs for youth providers and schools, and awareness and education about advocacy, harm reduction, suicide prevention, consent, sexual health and HIV/ STD prevention. New Beginnings’ recent sponsorship of Outright L-A allowed them to receive a grant from the Maine Community Foundation’s Equity Fund, which will support a few hours a week of the Program Coordinator’s time.
