HARM REDUCTION & PREVENTION: Partnering with Youth to Reduce Risk of HIV/AIDS (HRAP)
Held in-person March 7th & 8th, 2023 from 3:30PM to 7:00PM
Applications Open February 7th – March 3rd, 2023
THIS TRAINING IS FOR FOLKS AGES 14 to 21 ONLY. There will be another option for those who are over 21 offered at a later date.
The HRAP Training is designed to help youth acquire the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to effectively address a variety of challenging issues that may arise when identifying and facing risks associated with HIV/AIDS. New Beginnings, Inc., with support from the Maine Department of Education, is pleased to offer this training opportunity to youth from across the state of Maine.
Assessing and reducing risks is challenging work. Someone might not feel comfortable talking honestly about sensitive issues such as substance use, harm reduction, and a wide range of sexual beliefs and behaviors. Prevention strategies are more important than ever as Maine continues to see young people face unplanned pregnancies, substance use, and new STIs, including HIV infection. This training focuses on sharing knowledge to promote Positive Youth Development, and emphasizing building on the strengths and resiliency that all young people possess. This introductory training is for all youth, regardless of current knowledge about HIV/AIDS. A participation stipend of $75 in the form of a Visa gift card is available to youth who complete the full training series.
Training objectives include:
- A basic understanding of HIV transmission and testing practices
- A basic understanding of the theory and process of behavior change
- Harm reduction strategies related to substance use
- Skills for helping assess youth risks for HIV, STI’s, and pregnancy
- Addressing the unique needs of often-marginalized groups, including BIPOC and gender and sexuality minorities
Do you know a young person who may be interested in learning the skills associated with participating in this training? Email Jessa Wyman, HIV Prevention Training Specialist jwyman@newbeginmaine.org for more info!
This training series is in-person; participation will require individuals to be able to attend both days, in-person.
Certificates of Attendance will be provided upon completion of the entire training series.
