Loud & Proud: LGBTQ+ Allyship for Youth Providers

This FREE training will be held in-person on May 8th, 2024 from 10:00AM to 12:00PM in Bangor, ME

Want to be a champion for LGBTQ+ youth? This training provides the foundation! Join the Maine Statewide Youth Action Board as they break down key concepts around sexual orientation and gender identity, explore the unique experiences of LGBTQ+ youth coming out, and delve into the challenges they face. You’ll gain the knowledge and practical skills to create a safe and supportive space for them, along with actionable ways to be a powerful ally in their lives

Training objectives include, but are not limited to:

Define key terms: Participants will gain a solid understanding of vocabulary related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

Navigate coming-out journeys: Explore the diverse experiences of LGBTQ+ youth as they come out to themselves and others, fostering empathy and understanding.

Identify challenges and risks: Recognize the unique struggles and health disparities faced by LGBTQ+ youth, including: bullying, discrimination, HIV infection, stigma, and mental health concerns.

Develop allyship skills: Equip participants with practical strategies to create safe spaces, advocate for LGBTQ+ youth, and be a powerful ally in their personal and social environments.

PLEASE NOTE: Application priority will be given to youth workers and staff from youth/social service agencies, residential programs, and alternative schools who work with teens and young adults at high risk for negative health outcomes or homelessness/out of home placements. Adults/educators who do not currently work directly with these youth (e.g. primarily work with younger adolescents, children, lower-risk populations, or in program administration) may submit an application request but will likely be placed on the waiting list until after the application deadline, and contacted as space allows.
