Job Summary:
The Prevention & Training Specialist position includes a unique mix of implementing internal organizational training practices, providing technical assistance and outreach to local, state, and national partners, direct youth service provision, and program coordination and supervision duties. This role is responsible for the execution of statewide Maine Dept. of Education HIV Prevention training work/contract. The Prevention and Training Specialist is the in-house subject matter expert regarding NB’s Mission, Values, and Model of Care.
Essential Job Functions:
- Program Coordination & Personnel Management:
- Oversee daily operations of the Prevention & Training Program.
- Collects and analyzes relevant data for purposes of monitoring the Prevention & Training Programs quality and effectiveness.
- Responsible for monitoring and revising Prevention & Training Programs procedures and is responsible for implementation of program procedures.
- Ensures the physical location(s) of the Prevention & Training Program and related equipment are maintained in accordance with workplace norms and regulations and operated according to health and safety standards.
- Maintains data collection, evaluation, and reporting of Prevention & Training Program services, including supporting the Maine Homeless Youth Risk Behavior Survey.
- Organizational Service Provision:
- Develop, plan, and implement relevant content in collaboration with Senior Leadership for NB Staff to meet organizational and programmatic requirements.
- Develop, plan, and implement annual education and training workshops for NB Staff to meet organizational and programmatic requirements.
- Ensure all curricula remain relevant and up-to-date with emerging and best-practices.
- Respond to requests from NB Leadership to provide targeted content to address emerging organizational needs, as identified.
- Remain engaged in ongoing professional development to help ensure possession of current industry knowledge.
- Service Provision to Youth:
- Staffs the Prevention & Training Program; ensures that services utilize Youth Development principles and are responsive to youth needs, including issues related to trauma.
- In consultation with the Department Director, advocates for youth access to appropriate and necessary services.
- Encourages youth participation in program planning and implementation.
- Engage in other direct-service youth work as appropriate or assigned by Department Director.
- Community Collaboration and Training:
- Participate in community outreach, networking events, and presentations.
- Serve on statewide groups or committees related to the Prevention & Training Program’s mission as appropriate.
- Assist with website, social media and outreach materials as requested.
- Submit proposals to state and national conferences as a means of providing larger-scale training and technical assistance on behalf of the organization.
- Other Related Duties:
- Participates in community, networking and advocacy efforts as assigned.
- Represents New Beginnings’ Prevention & Training Program at community events.
- Other duties may be assigned by the Department Director.
Qualifications and Specifications:
Education and Training: Bachelor’s degree in a related field is strongly preferred; some education or training in health or human sexuality preferred. Background or experience in working with vulnerable youth or young adults, including unhoused populations; knowledge of dynamics of trafficking and exploitation; reproductive health education or HIV/STI prevention; experience/cultural humility with LGBTQ+ youth/communities; event planning and/or teaching or training experience required.
Specialized Skills: Excellent group facilitation skills; expertise in all facets of organizational Model of Care including Harm Reduction, Positive Youth Development, Stages of Change, Motivational Interviewing, and Cultural Humility; sexuality education; presentation skills (development through execution) and knowledge of multiple learning styles, including working with educators and adult learners; ability to work with young people in a youth development framework. Experience with Staff supervision, data collection and reporting required. Good driving record and reliable transportation required.
Cognitive Requirements: Literacy and writing skills on at least a college level; excellent communication and good organizational skills; ability to conceptualize; critical thinking skills; strong proficiency in technology/computer use, including facilitating virtual trainings.
Physical Requirements: Strength and dexterity to set up training equipment and supplies and conduct group training sessions; ability to lift and transport training materials to and from sites. Ability to climb stairs.
Additional Information: Position is based in Lewiston with periodic statewide travel, as well as potential out-of-state travel for professional development opportunities and similar (including overnight stays). Evening availability may be required to facilitate groups within New Beginnings programming, etc. based on need.
